Installing Linux in Manshiyat Nasser in Cairo
In 2004, Virtual Activism., through its MENA region initiative mengos and with the cooperation of Eg-Lug, installed a complete computer network in Mashiyet Nasser, an informal settlement in Cairo, Egypt. The computers were donated by the Ministry of Technology to a local community development organization. Virtual Activism used this opportunity to recruit EG-Lug's dedicated youth to install a full network with a Linux operating system and other free and open source software.

Virtual Activism recognizes the difficulty and expense of attending physical or online workshops offered by other entities. We have also seen, through our experience with nonprofit organizations around the world, the myriad Internet needs that have not been met, and how this hinders the capabilities of NGOs when using the Internet. Based on a survey conducted with NGOs around the world, Virtual Activism has more information on their specific needs. We will therefore continue to offer online workshops starting mid-summer 2010. Dates will be posted soon.
Virtual Activism was invited by the Population Council in Nairobi to organize a workshop for local NGOs. The workshop was organized from 11-13 August 04 with 10 NGOs attending and 18 participants. The workshop was based on the curriculum developed by Virtual Activism on Maximizing the use and effectiveness of the Internet in human rights and development. Participants were given certificates of participation.
