Mengos Hub launched
Mengos , the Middle East NGO Hub/Center for Knowledge Society, has just been relaunched with a new direction. Mengos is the MENA initiative of Virtual Activism that started in 2003 when the need arose for special workshops targeting Middle Eastern NGOs in particular. Prior to that, Virtual Activism was organizing workshops throughout the world including Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe.
The initiative began with creating a site especially for human rights NGOs across the MENA Region, with an NGO database in Arabic, English and French to enable those NGOs to connect to each other and to others beyond the Middle East. Soon the initiative developed into supporting blogs and bloggers, and began offering training workshops to members of civil society. In the initial phase MENGOS then began a pilot project in Cairo and expanded to Alexandria and other governorates close to Cairo. In Phase II we expanded the project to include Moroccan NGOs and later moved to Tunisia and Lebanon. Participants included not only NGO employees but also members of the media and journalism, judges, and members of several informal settlement communities built around and beyond Cairo.
MENGOS has now developed into a complete ICT hub and has been re-launched this week. The intiative includes dissent/crisis mapping, videos, tutorials, and databases of civil society NGOs as well as of banned publications, books and websites. Your comments are highly appreciated.
