The Conference on Women and New Social Media in the Mediterranean Region was organized by Centre Isis pour Femmes et Developpment in Fez, Morocco with the cooperation of Fez University from 24-26 June 2011. The Conference was attended by more than 100 women and men from the region, and was especially interesting because it included many of the younger generations presenters and attendees. Panelists were primarily academics who presented papers around the following general topics:

  • The increasing impact of the new medias in the Mediterranean region
  • Women’s virtual activism : internet, facebook, and blogs in the Mediterranean region
  • Language, education and the new media in the Mediterranean region
  • The impact of the new media on “gender” relations in the Mediterranean societies
  • Women, orality, illiteracy and the new media in the Mediterranean region
  • Feminisms and new medias in the mediterranean region

At the conclusion of the conference, participants wrote a declaration of 5 points:

  1. use of social media is a necessity for further developing the feminist movement
  2. encouraging women to use new social media to support their rights
  3. providing gender sensitivity workshops addressing issues of the right of women to access and use the internet given that access to the internet is now a human right
  4. encouraging women to blog as an easy method to express themselves
  5. using social media to combat violence against women
